2011 Texas Transportation Summit Highlights

Irving hosted the 13th annual Texas Transportation & Infrastructure Summit from August 9-12.

Safe driving speaker Jennifer Smith told the summit that she believes an attitude change about when it is appropriate to use a cellphone is desperately needed. Smith suggests that people could change their voicemail greeting in order to alleviate some people's reasoning for using the phone while driving.

"People think you're ignoring them when you don't answer the call," she contended. Her mother, Linda, was killed in a 2008 car crash in which the driver was texting. "Change your outgoing message. It really works. It controls people's emotions on it."

Ms. Smith thinks that if people create more specific voicemail messages, then they will not feel like they have to answer a call or will be perceived as rude. She suggests something along the lines of: "Hi, this is (your name). I'm either unavailable or driving. If you leave a message, I'll call you back as soon as I can."

"It's the easy way out to blame texting, and it's the easy way out to blame teenagers," claimed Smith. "Those teenagers learned it from us."
